Place anchor. Scammers sometimes claim to be someone you know, such as a government official, a family member, a charity or a company in which you do business. Do not send money or give personal information in response to an unforeseen request whether it comes as a text, a phone call or an email.
Do the searches online. Type in your favorite search engine a company or product name with words such as "review," "complaint" or "scam." Or search for a phrase that describes your situation, such as "IRS call." You can even search for phone numbers to see if others have reported them as scams

Don't trust your Caller ID. Technology makes false caller ID details simple for scammers so the name and number you see isn't always true. Hang up when someone calls to ask for money or personal information. If you think the caller might tell the truth, then call back to a number that you believe is real.

Remember how you are paying out. Credit cards have built in substantial fraud protection, but some forms of payment do not. Connecting money through services such as Western Union or MoneyGram is risky, because getting your money back is almost impossible. This applies to reloadable cards (such as MoneyPak or Reloadit) and gift cards (such as iTunes or Google Play), too. Government offices and honest businesses will not require you to use those methods of payment.
