This condition mainly affects the parts of the body such as forearm, elbow, neck and shoulder. The major cause of the injury repeatedly use of muscles, intensive exercise etc. The symptoms include such as weakness, cramp, pain in muscles etc.

Some of the options used to reduce or prevent RSI in the workplace are:

Answer #1

1-Explain what Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) is and describe the most common causes.

Repetitive Strain Injury: Also called as Cumulative Trauma Disorder, Repititive Trauma Disorder, Nontraumatic musculoskeletal Injury, Overuse Syndrome, regional Musculoskeletal Disorder, Workrelated Musculoskelletal Disorder.

Repetitive strain injury is a painful conditions which occurs in muscles, tendons as well as in the nerves due to excessive overuse of movement. This condition mainly affects the parts of the body such as forearm, elbow, neck and shoulder.(Most of the cases are above the waist)

The major cause of the injury repeatedly use of muscles, intensive exercise, poor posture, repetitive lifting of heavy objects, Insufficient muscle rest, poor work ergonomics.

Though it includes symptoms of weakness, cramp, pain in muscles, recently specific disorders like carpal tunnel syndrome, cubital tunnel syndrome, Guyon canal syndrome, lateral epicondylitis, and tendonitis of the wrist or hand are included in this.

The risk factors include poor posture, poor positioning, Forceful exertions, repetitive actions, exposure to vibrations, contact stress, Extreme temperatures, Poor work place ergonomics (poor lightning, hard surfaces, improper work furnitures/ instruments) etc.

Repeated movements can cause strain to the muscles, ligaments, tendons causing small tears and leading to inflammation (characterised by five cardinal features of redness, swelling, increased temperature, pain and loss of function)

2- Describe the available options used to reduce or prevent RSI in the workplace

Factor causing RSI should be Identified and modified:

Education of the person regarding the factors causing the same - Taking care of back while bending or picking heavy objects, Taking regular breaks if work is repetitive, Small exercise at work place, Proper ergonomics at the work place

Pain medication if required, Physiotherapy of the affected place

Appropriate Rest when effected

Change of work/workplace if required

Change of lifestyle/Lifestyle modification
