Answer #1

According to the ability of an animal to control its body temperature, they are divided into warm-blooded and cold-blooded animals. Cold-blooded animals are also called conformers that cannot control their body temperature and change it according to the surrounding environment. However, warm-blooded animals also referred to as regulators are known to control their body temperature to maintain a constant internal environment.

For regulation of body temperature to maintain a constant internal environment, metabolic heat is used. Thermogenesis is just the process of release of metabolic energy in the form of heat. Thermogenesis occurs in specialized tissues such as brown adipose tissue and skeletal muscle.

There are basically three types of thermogenesis: exercise-induced, non-exercise induced and diet-induced.

Exercise Activity thermogenesis (EAT) is the type in which heat energy dissipated due to intentional exercise like activity such as running, jumping, biking, etc. In this heat is generated in the muscles.

Non-exercise activity thermogenesis (NEAT) is heat energy dissipated due to non-exercise like activities that exclude sleeping, eating, and exercising but includes every other trivial activity that we are involved in which heat energy is dissipated. NEAT can be further classified into shivering and non-shivering. Shivering generates heat and raises the body temperature which is a mechanism used by hibernating animals to control their body temperature while coming out of hibernation. Non-shivering thermogenesis occurs in the brown adipose tissue.

Diet-induced thermogenesis(DIT) is simply the production of heat due to the ingestion of food. Food ingested is converted into energy to dissipate in form of heat and the amount of heat generated depends on the size and composition of the meal taken.
