9. What is the child labor law in the US? Do you agree or disagree? What are your own experiences with working while under 18, were the laws followed or no?

1. Child Labor Law in U.S.:

The U.S. Department of Labor is the sole federal agency that monitors child labor and enforces child labor laws. The most sweeping federal law that restricts the employment and abuse of child workers is the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).

FLSA: Child labor provisions under FLSA are designed to protect the educational and growth opportunities of youth and prohibit their employment in jobs that are detrimental to their health and safety. FLSA restricts the hours that youth under 16 years of age can work and also provides the list of hazardous occupations that are too dangerous for young workers to perform. Enforcement of the FLSA's child labor provisions is handled by the Department's Wage and Hour Division.

The Employment and Training Administration sponsors many programs designed to provide training opportunities and and job placement assistance programs for America's youth.

The efforts and activities of the Department's Bureau of International Labor Affairs’ (ILAB) Office of Child Labor, Forced Labor, and Human Trafficking include research and publication of major reports on international child labor, forced labor, and human trafficking; funding and oversight of projects to eliminate exploitive child labor and forced labor around the world; and assistance in the development and implementation of U.S. government policy on international child labor, forced labor, and human trafficking issues.

2. There are laws and regulations that determine how old a teenager can be to legally work. Child labor laws restrict how old children must be to work when they can work and what jobs they can do. These laws are in place to ensure that children do not do any work that's dangerous or bad for their health and to guarantee that children’s focus remains on education.

These laws determine when a teenager can get a job, what kinds of jobs are allowed, and what paperwork is necessary. The federal government, as well as most state governments, have laws that define child labor. These laws vary from state to state.

3.  After the industrialization of United States; many factory owners hired young workers for a variety of tasks. Specially in the textile mills, children were often hired together with their parents. Children were useful to fixing machinery and navigating the small areas that fully grown adults could not. Many families in mill towns depended on the children's labor to make enough money for necessities.

The U.S. Department of Labor's Wage and Hour Division (WHD) administers and enforces the federal child labor laws. Generally speaking, the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) sets the minimum age for employment (14 years for non-agricultural jobs), restricts the hours of work for the youth under the age of 16, and also prohibits youth under the age of 18 from being employed in hazardous occupations.

4. Does child labor laws actually being followed or not: It is significant to note that the Rules make special provisions for the inclusion of child actors in any type of audio-visual entertainment like in films, short films, T.V Serials, Reality Shows, etc.

Prohibition of employment of children in any occupation and process: Children under the age of 14 years, will now be prohibited from working in any occupations. However, where children contribute significantly to the family income by being a part of family businesses, the section exempts those helping their family or family enterprise, other than any hazardous occupations or processes set forth in the Schedule, after his school hours or during vacation, from the purview of the Act.

Conclusion: we note is that the prohibition of employing children as enumerate are relaxed for child artists, however, children employed in the circus are not subject to this relaxation. We ponder: how are the current reality shows where 5-year-old toddlers share marital jokes (the meaning of which we doubt they understand) different from circuses.
