Single-Payer Health Insurance

There are currently opinions being voiced about the United States converting to a federally-administered single-payer health-care program (Medicare-for-All). The Federal Government would decide what care to deliver, which drugs to pay for, and how much to pay doctors and hospitals. Private insurance would be banned because, as the Congressional Budget Office has noted, high-income people might prefer to purchase substitutive insurance that offered more generous benefits or greater access to providers.

The Discussion Board question this week is, “What are the pros and cons of having single-payer (Federal government) health insurance?”

Other countries with single-payer systems have access to new wonder-drugs and improved medical devices developed in the U.S. What, if any, will be the effect of U.S. government-mandated pricing on the development of new pharmaceutical treatments like the gene therapy Luxturna that costs $850,000 per patient? On the development in the U.S. of new medical devices? With U.S. government-mandated pricing, will they be developed?

How much taxpayer money would be needed to pay for such a system? What will be the effects relative to individual taxes?
