Debate forum 3: Debate question, is bilateral mastectomy a good preventative choice for women who have all the genetic markers for breast cancer?

Yes is it a good choice for women who have all the genetic markers for breast cancer, but for women who don’t have all the genetic markers it is not necessarily a good choice.

Breast cancer is the most common cause of cancer in women and second cause of cancer deaths among females.

Factors effecting choice of bilateral mastectomy age, genetics, stage of cancer, future screening, cost, quality of life, personal preference.

Younger women are twice as likely to have a bilateral mastectomy then older women.

Women who have HER2 Human epidermal growth factor receptor 2, positive breast cancer mutation genes were more likely to undergo bilateral mastectomy.

Hereditary Breast cancer is a situation that would benefit women with a double mastectomy.

Women who are positive for BRCA1 or BRCA2, 1 or Type 2susceptibility Breast cancer Type protein mutations are good candidates for double mastectomy.

Bilateral mastectomy does not reduce the risk of recurrence of the original Cancer.

Bilateral mastectomy may reduce the risk of second cancer that could affect survival.

Breast cancer is one of the most common among women. It is important for women to get their regular check up such as mammogram. Younger women are twice as likely to have a bilateral mastectomy then older women. So, regular checkups can reduce the risk of disease development. The early sign and symptoms such as lumps, discharge etc could be analysed and treatment can be Perfomed. So, Bilateral mastectomy may reduce the risk of second cancer that could affect survival.
