A mastectomy is the surgical removal of breast tissue in one (unilateral mastectomy) or both breasts (bilateral mastectomy) to treat or prevent breast cancer. Older mastectomy procedures did not preserve breast skin, but newer procedures allow the possibility of preserving the skin for a more natural appearance. Weather you have breast cancer or at high risk of development, mastectomy could be the appropriate option for you. The presence of key genetic mutations and strong family history determines those at high risk. The surgeon may have to remove some lymph nodes under the arm pit of the affected breast region to see how far the cancer has spread. If cancer is detected then more lymph nodes may need to be removed or not then no farther lymph nodes will need to be removed. Other types of mastectomies include total mastectomy, skin-sparing mastectomy, and nipple-sparing mastectomy (Mastectomy - Mayo Clinic, 2019).

            Mastectomy is a good preventative choice for women who have all the genetic

markers for breast cancer. It is always better to be safe than sorry. I also believe age plays a huge factor in this choice because of the ability to breast feed. If a woman that wants to have children and breast feed maybe she should hold off on mastectomy until it’s one-hundred percent certain or she’s done bearing children. However, if a woman is done having children, she for sure should go through with the mastectomy because advancements in today’s reconstructive breast are second to none. Women can walk around confidently with unnatural breasts that appear similar to their own or may be even better in appearance. Cosmetic breast implants are such a common thing in today’s society weather breast cancer is involved or not.  Why take the risk?

Prevention is better than cure.A women has all genetic markers making her high risk for breast cancer can make use of the medical advancement and protect her from getting the deadly disease. Mastectomy is a welcome one which can save a life, when once it was not possible and death was imminent with complications.This procedure is now common as a cosmetic surgery and made women more self confident and face the world efficiently.
