As we all know that concept of health is all about holistic wellness which is physical , social and mental well being. Let us now see about how did the concept of health change overtime.

1) Ancient medicine: this era we can say that they believed in supernatural healing.. for them the concept of health was totally related with religion. People would depend upon religious healers ... supernatural healing was the concept of health in this era.

2) Hippocratic concept of health: it can be said that it is the break from supernatural concept of health. They are known as father of modern medicine. They established and understood the relationship between environment and personal cleanliness and also understood the origin of disease. They were focused on body balance also..

3) Holistic and societal health in Roman empire era: the revolutionary person in this era was Galen, who actually expanded the Hippocratic definition of health .. he was more focused on the balance between the body fluids. He also determined temperament and personality.Galen is the one who developed holistic idea of health that considered the whole patient including mental and emotional states.

4) WHO concept of health: it was formulated in the year 1948 . WHO declared that it is a state of complete physical, mental and social well being, not merely the absence of infirmity or disease.

This was developed during world war 2. The United nations formulated WHO in order to monitor and encourage the health initiatives made all over the world to achieve the highest possible level of health  

We can say that the changes in the society and advancement in the scientific till now kept on improving the concept of health .

The phrase health promotion was coined by Henry E. Siegrist in the year 1945 who is a great medical historian. Health promotion is not a new thing it has been happening since 1945... ways in health promotion has evolved so much... health promotio is often the synonym for health education. It is mainly used to prevent illness and also in protective measures. Health promotion is more relevant today than ever in addressing public health.
