Pathophysiology related to medical diagnosis (es) (A statement of how normal physiology is altered by the disease process):-
A build up of fats and cholesterol on artery walls restricts blood flow.
The extremities affected, usually legs, do not receive enough blood flow to meet the oxygen requirements. This results in pain and in severe cases necrosis.
Usual signs and symptoms :-
- Intermittent claudication
- Leg numbness or weakness
- Coldness in lower leg
- sores on feet that won't heal
- Skin colour change
- Hair loss on effected extremity
- Slowed nail growth
- No/ weak pulse
Possible Complications:-
- Limb ischemia : begin from an open sore, injury or Infection that progresses causing tissue death.
- Stroke and Myocardial Infarction (MI) : The atherosclerosis that causes this can deposit in arteries that supply the heart and brain.
