The economic development, talent pool, climate and football legacy of a country's men are important predictors of the level of football performance of its women.

A national team's popularity also depends on the sport's popularity within that country. A particular sport is very popular in some countries and may be a national sport but that does not always mean that their national team is the most popular. Also, the league of the national team itself may be popular but the international competition in which it competes is not. The Papua New Guinea National Rugby League Team (PNGL) is extremely popular, for instance, because the sport is popular in the country, even though it is not the highest competition it competes in - the Rugby League World Cup.
