TENSION NECK SYNDROME

Definition

Tension neck syndrome is the muscle pain occurring in the cervicobrachial (neck, shoulder, and arm) region.

Causes

• Immobility such as in an office job
• Emotional stress and depression
• Continuous & constant postures
• Monotonous movements with fingers, wrist, and arm
• Job related as in electricians, painters, mechanics, etc.
• Continuous use of computer mouse
• Keeping mobile in between neck and head while attending a call.
• Poor back support.
• Sleeping position
• Lifting heavyweights.
• Injury to the neck

Symptoms

• muscle tightness, spasm.
• neck stiffness
• Pain

Interventions

• Extend and relax neck muscles every 30 minutes in between the work
• Use a computer with a proper height that is adjustable according to the individual stature.
• Keep the neck always in a neutral position.
• Always sit supporting the back with cushion or pillows.
• Use earphones while attending calls on a phone.
• Apply heat or ice
• Massage the area of pain
• Non-Steroidal Anti Inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen can be taken
• Relaxation techniques like yoga and meditation relieve neck tension.
