Qs1 - Diseases which are caused by drinking contaminated or untreated water are termed as water borne diseases. This contaminated water contains many micro-organisms which are pathogenic. Water borne diseases can be spread by eating food exposed to contaminated water, while bathing, washing etc. Common symptoms of this illness include vomitting, diarrhoea, respiratory, eye and skin problems.

Various pathogens such as bacteria, protozoa, viruses,algae and worms are known to cause water-borne diseases. Few examples are given below:

Bacteria:

Cholera caused by Vibrio cholerae.

Dysentry caused by Shigella dysenteriae.

Botulism caused by Clostridium bolulinum.

Typhoid cause by Salmonella typhi.

Virus:

Polyomavirus infection caused by JC virus and BK virus.

Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome cause by Coronavirus.

Protozoa:

Ameobiasis by Entamoeba hystolytica.

Giardiasis by Giardia lamblia

Worms:

Guinea worm disease by Dracunculus mendinensis.
