There are various critical aspects for nursing home administrators. Firstly, they work to supervise clinical and administrative affairs of nursing homes and related facilities. In particular, the duties of nursing home administrators include overseeing staff and personnel, financial matters, medical care, medical supplies, facilities, and other duties as the specific positions demand.

There are also long term care administrators who see the daily operations of a nursing home, adult day care, or assisted living facility. Here, many facilities prefer to hire administrators in a related field and some long term care experience.

To evaluate the daily needs, these administrators possess a working knowledge of the physical and psychological effects of the aging process. This knowledge helps nursing home administrators to implement the necessary nursing care, drug administration to successfully treat a resident and also improve their standard of living.

With an understanding of a resident's physical limitations, these professionals have to assess where and how an   individual would benefit from assistance with daily activities, such as bathing or eating. Communication skills and clinical experience are essential for working with residents with possible mental impairments.

Nursing home administrators has the responsibility and acts as the patient's liaison between staff and doctors. They must ensure quality care for a resident by communicating instructions and set results as needed from both parties.

These professionals must utilize their communication skills to navigate the emotional dynamics associated with counseling residents and their families. They are responsible for safety training sessions, but also understanding the human resources side of the management. Nursing home administrators have to be experts in employee benefits and insurance for auditing purposes and also work to determine how an employee’s wellbeing affects the facility as a whole.

Nursing home administrators also take charge of the financial aspects of their facilities by working with accounting and payroll software systems that enable budget and expense reports. They should be well trained with a comprehensive understanding of Medicare, Medicaid, bylaws and other legal policies, and are aware of residents' rights so that they can optimize the quality of their long term stay.

These persons must comply with fire and safety codes and for this, nursing home administrators delegate special persons to remedy any potential issues in a quick and effective manner. The administrators implement and oversee proper sanitizing and handling procedures with housekeeping and cafeteria departments so that residents can have quality, personalized, home like experiences.

The administrators have a diverse range of leadership, financial and clinical responsibilities, they have the potential to bring massive improvements in standards of living for an aging population. Fortunately, aspiring administrators are one step closer to implementing these kinds of across the board responsibilities without sacrificing their current healthcare roles.
