A 19-yr old basketball player has IT-band friction syndrome that has not responded to one week of therapy.  He wants to get a cortisone shot.  Should you recommend that he get one?  What are the benefits?  What are the risks and contraindications?

Iliotibial band friction syndrome is common injury of knee as a result of inflammation of distal portion of iliotibial band . It causes lateral knee pain.

cortisone injection helps to reduce inflammation,hence pain.

risk involves softening

risk include weakening of soft tissues like cartilage and tendons

contraindicatiins include sepsis, intraarticular infections, skin breakdown at injection site, hypersensitivity to steroid, bacteremia etc
