Hello everyone,  insulin-to-carbohydrate ratios should be well calculated because intake of either too much or too little levels of carbohydrates would either result in hyperglycemia or hypoglycemia, however many patients are not able to comprehend how these ratios are calculated therefore when a patient doesn't understand how to calculate insulin-to-carbohydrate ratios, what would be should be the best advice to give to the patient?

The best advice for patient regarding how to calculate insulin to carbohydrate ratios,

Plan ahead and eat all of your meal.Take your rapid -acting insulin 15 minutes before you eat.The only the time it is pkay to take the rapid -acting insulin after eating is for very young children who may not eat everything.

More than that we can advise the patient how to calculate insulin to carbohydrate ratio,devide total grams of carbohydrate by the rato of amount Example:if the patient is plan to eat 55 gram of carbohydrate ,

1)He can divide total gram of carbohydrate by ratio of 20

2)Round up to the nearest half of unit

Another example for to calculate insulin to carbihydrate ratio ( if total carbohydrate 500)

If patient will plan to take total of 25 units of insulin in typical day ,each units should cover approximately 20 grams of carbohydrate (500/25=20)
