whats the theory on the following devices: penrose drain Jackson Pratt Hemovac Wound Vac
Penrose drain:
Penrose drain is a flat, soft, flexible tube it allow blood and
body fluids drain outside. It prevent fluid collection under the
surgical site and prevent infeciton. it will be scured with the
skin by suture. passive drains due to gravity make optimal drinage.
this drain should be exit by the single stab incision away from the
primary incision, it increases drain effectively. The dorsal end of
the drain should be in the wound or drain end should be secured
with the suture outside. it should be covered with sterile
absorband bandage otherwise it causes skin irritation.
Jackson Pratt drains:
It is also called as JP drains, it is used for veterinary practice.
There will be continuous suction by collapsible grenade style
collection reservoir. It is simple to use and various sizes with
the desired length are available. It is made from extension sets
like butterfly sets and it can be attached to the syringe. plunges
drawback and with safety pin can be placed to maintain pressure.
The fenestrated portion will be inside the wound and the drain
tubing will be outside from existed site to avoid air enter into
the wound. special care must be done for closed wound otherwise the
wound should be sealed and drain secured.
Hemovac wound vac:
Hemovac drain removes fluids from the body after the surgery. it is
a circular device connected with tube. one end will be placed
inside the surgical site as a drain site and it connected to the
end and other end placed inside during surgery. stitches will hold
the tube in position. It removes fluids by suction. The device
squeezed flat and when fluid collects it expand.
