Considering that the majority of operating room managers and directors do not function in a patient care or clinical role, is it necessary to require such leaders to be registered nurses? In your opinion, what might be the advantage of hiring a surgical technologist with management and organizational leadership experience? What additional education and experience is necessary to prepare you for such a position? And finally, how would you convince hospital administration that you are better suited for the position than an otherwise qualified registered nurse?

Hiring a surgical technologist with management and organizational leadership experience as operating room managers and directors have multiple advantages. Some of these advantages are:

  • Good communication skills: The surgical technologists with management experience are very good in their communication skills. They are well aware of a person’s autonomy, dignity and comfort while communicating, which makes it effective for the authority members and the patients to communicate and share their issues and solutions properly.
  • Attentiveness: It is important for the operating room managers and directors to be attentive and aware about the processes taking place in the operating rooms. The surgical technologists have the key skill of attentiveness, which makes them suitable for the job.
  • Be dedicated and reliable: The authority and management in any department must possess dedication and reliability. Their dedication and reliability enable their authority member to trust them. Therefore, it is evident enough to call the surgical technologists with management experience and leadership skills to be effective for the post of operating rooms and directs as they are very dedicated toward their work and they possess proper reliability toward their service.

It is important for the operation room manager and director to have a Bachelor’s of science (BSN) in nursing at least. However, some of the organizations demand them to have an additional post graduate degree in nursing or administration. An operating room manager must have some surgical experience. He/she should have proper expertise in operational activities such as maximizing operational efficiency, maximizing the number of surgical cases and maximizing the number of resources. An effective resume for the post of operation room manager and director should have an experience of 5 years.

I am certainly better suited for the position than any other qualified registered nurse because of my technical experience in the surgical ward and operation ward. I have proper exposure to the activities undertaking in the operation theater and I am well aware of the processes that are required to maximize the output of surgeries with limited resources. My technical knowledge, expertise, dedication, good communication skills, leadership qualities, and reliability makes me suitable for the position.
