Pertussis or whooping cough is a highly contagious respiratory disease caused by the bacterium Bordetella pertussis. It is the uncontrollable, violent coughing which generally makes it hard to breathe. The symptoms include (MayoClinic);

  • A runny nose
  • Nasal congestion
  • Red, watery eyes
  • Fever
  • A cough

Severe and prolonged coughing attacks

  • Provokes vomiting
  • Results in a red or blue face
  • Causes extreme fatigue
  • Ends with a high-pitched "whoop" sound in the next breath of air
