Pertussis or whooping cough is a highly contagious respiratory disease caused by the bacterium Bordetella pertussis. It is the uncontrollable, violent coughing which generally makes it hard to breathe. The symptoms include (MayoClinic);

A runny nose
Nasal congestion
Red, watery eyes
Fever
A cough

Severe and prolonged coughing attacks

Provokes vomiting
Results in a red or blue face
Causes extreme fatigue
Ends with a high-pitched "whoop" sound in the next breath of air
