Role of health education in health promotion
One of the main purpose of health education is the promotion of health. Health education is an integral component of health promotion as the processs of health education mainly focusing on improvement of health of the individual by preventing diseases and promoting health.
The role of health education in health promotion is ;
* empowering the individual, family and community through education so that they can make informed choices and decisions related to their health and its promotion.
* To ensure active participation of individual, family and community in health promotion
For example: Health education regarding the Benefits of breast feeding will encourage the mother for exclusive breast feeding for the baby. It will promote baby's health and protects the baby from infections.
Nursing process and health education
Nursing process is a systematic process of identifying the patients' actual or potential problems;, developing , implementing the nursing actions for it and evaluating the effectiveness of nursing interventions.
Patient education is an integral part of nursing process. Before developing a patient education, nurse has to identify the actual or potential problems of individual or family. Based on the assessment, a health education can be planned and patient education can be done as a part of nursing interventions and the effectiveness of the patient education can be done as a last part of nursing process.
Contemporary issue: Over weight and obesity among family members
There are increased incidence of obesity amd over weight in people compared with previous years. American's quality of life can be impacted by Obesity related complications such as Diabetes mellitus, High cholesterol, hypertension and Coronary artery diseases . Genetics and behaviour can be the contributing factors for obesity. Behaviours such as decreased physical activity or inactivity, dietary patterns, even medications use also cause obesity .
As a part of health education plan nurse can adress the issue of Obesity. Health education can be planned on importance of healthy body weight, importance of regular physical exercise, Healthy meals, preventing obesity in kids etc. Health education can also be emphasised on the various complications of obesity or overweight.
Issues that prevent a family from health promotion:
Health promotion is a process of enabling the individual or family to improve their health or to increase control over their health. There are certain barriers or issues that prevent the family from health promotion. This issues are : * demographic features such as low income ( less nutrition as the purchasing power become low), educational level ( ignorance regarding the importance of healthy and balanced diet).
* health beliefs and practices: Certain health beliefs and practices affects family's Health. example: Some religious groups are against to vaccination and treatment of illness.
* Financial status: A family's financial health affects the family members health. High income families are in risk for obesity. Low income families are in risk for nutritional deficiencies and less access to healthcare.
These all factors acts as the barriers for health promotion in the family.
