  • These are the compounds found in plants .
  • Phytochemicals or phytonutrients are the biologically active ,naturally occuring substances in plants that have protective pr disease preventive properties .
  • They act as natural defense mechanisms in their host plants .they also provide pigment to the plants .they are non essential nutrients ,meaning that they are not required by the human body For sustaining life .

Types : phenolic acids , flavonoids ,stilbenes / ligans

Examples :

1) Phytochemical : lycopene

Sources : tomatoes and watermelons

Lycopene has been found to be 2times as powerful as beta carotene (vitamin A ) in the destruction of free radicals .

It can prevent from blind ness

2)phytochemical : allium compounds

Sources : onions , garlic ,scallions ,chives

They help to keep healthy celks in the body from being damaged by free radicals .

3) phytochemicals : ellagic acid .

Sources : grapes , strawberries ,cranberries ,nuts ,blackberries ,raspberries

Appears to make blood less likely to clot therefore is beneficial in preventing heart diseases.
