Answer: Emotional intelligence can be defined as the ability of a person to control, evaluate and analyse emotions. The emotional intelligence in nursing provides better platform for the nurses to deal with the patients. Patient suffering from diseases are not only have physical discomfort but also they have mental stress. The illness affects both physical and mental status of the patients. So understanding the emotions of the patient is necessary to reduce their stress. And hence enable nurses to perform better and provide quality of care to the patient. Because emotional intelligence increases the confidence level.

The emotional intelligence not only benefit patients but also to the nurses as it prevents burn out. Emotional intelligence lead nurses to think, act wisely and quickly. It also makes them to understand the need of the patient if they are emotionally intelligent. This reduces the work pressure on the nurse and hence provide a better service to the patient. Emotional intelligence allows nurse to perform as a better leader. This is because understanding the situation according to the patient's perspective makes nurses to make quick wise decision in favour of patient's health.
