Pathophysiology of HIV in pregnancy :-

- Mother infected from HIV through any of the routes such as sexual transmission ,blood transfusions , infected needles etc .

- HIV can cross from mother's blood through placenta membrane to fetus

- Thinning of membrane during later months of gestation facilities HIV crossing over

- CD4 cells containing HIV virus can also infiltrate through placenta to fetus

- Results in primary infection in fetus in which the CD 4 cell count us above 1500 then asymptomatic stage of HIV in which CD4cells count is between 500 and 1500. Then the next stage symptomatic occur in which CD4 cells count between 200- 499 and then the last stage AIDS occur in which CD4 cells become less than 200.
