Answer: Phytonadione is a drug which is used as supplement of vitamin K. Usually in normal human beings the vitamin K produce itself but due to deficiency the supplement of vitamin K i.e. Phytonadione is taken.
This drug is taken for the treatment of deficiency of vitamin K as well as any blood clotting diseases due to any side of medication. It promotes in liver synthesis of clotting factors.
The injection of Phytonadione can cause some serious adverse effects such as it makes person feels weakness, fatigue, itchy etc. In young children it may be result in to fatal response if not directed properly. Contraindicated in the patients using blood thinners such as warfarin etc.
Nurse should educate the patient about the dose as well as food interactions. Nurse should intervene about the patient having any liver disease should avoid this drug. The IV should be given in emergency case. The oral dose should not exceed more than prescribed dose. Intake of other vitamin K source should be reduced such as consumption of free vegetables etc.
