During the game, there was some minimal friction between the key and her skin above the ankle. Five days later after the game when she had returned home, the area above th ankle became red and inflamed. A day later, the presence of small pus-filled boils was noted in the infected area. Her lower right leg was swollen, tender and reddened. When she went to the doctor the next day, she had a fever and complained of chills and nausea. Her WBC count was elevated to 16,000/uL The wound was aspirated and cultures were grown on Blood Agar. The colonies had smooth, entire margins and exhibited Beta hemolysis. A gram stain of the culture yielded Gram + cocci. A coagulase test was performed and yielded a coagulase + result.
