Health care is undergoing significant change on a continual basis, evidenced by recent trends in the industry such as the Affordable Care Act, technological advances, and patient-centered care. Provide your agreement or disagreement with the following statement, and explain the rationale for your position:

“Healthcare is growing–in some ways more like a new industry than like a long-standing one” (Moore, Eyestone, & Coddington, 2014, p. 3).

I agree with the above quoted statement. High cost is the primary reason Americans give for problems accessing health care. And if people are not able to access health services even with the advancing technology and improvement in health care it does not serve it's purpose. Americans with below-average incomes report not: visiting a physician when sick; getting a recommended test, treatment, or follow-up care; filling a prescription; and seeing a dentist. . In 2013, 31 percent of uninsured adults reported not getting or delaying medical care because of cost, compared to five percent of privately insured adults and 27 percent of those on public insurance, including Medicaid/CHIP and Medicare.

Now with the technological advances the cost of new technologies and prescription drugs have also increased. Another explanation for increased costs is the rise of chronic diseases, including obesity. Experts are focusing more on preventative care in an effort to improve health and reduce the financial burdens associated with chronic disease. One provision of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, commonly referred to as simply the Affordable Care Act (ACA), implemented in 2013, provides additional Medicaid funding for states providing low cost access to preventative care. The law has 3 primary goals:

• Make affordable health insurance available to more people. The law provides consumers with subsidies (“premium tax credits”) that lower costs for households with incomes between 100% and 400% of the federal poverty level.
• Expand the Medicaid program to cover all adults with income below 138% of the federal poverty level. (Not all states have expanded their Medicaid programs.)
• Support innovative medical care delivery methods designed to lower the costs of health care generally.

Finally, high administrative costs are a contributing factor to the inflated costs of U.S. health care. Also while the majority of U.S. citizens have health insurance, premiums are rising and the quality of the insurance policies is falling. Health insurance coverage is uneven and often minorities and the poor are underserved.

Now the WHO definition of healthy clearly mentions health services should be accessible and affordable to every individuals and families. But the health care is undergoing changes in such a way health is growing more like a industry than a long standing one.
