The most common cause of anger and negative attitude is miscommunication and misinterpretation of the other person’s words and intentions. Especially in the health care, the patients and the attendants are on the sufferer’s end. Most of the times they don’t have the knowledge about how and why things are done in specific way at specific time. They expect immediate treatment and immediate results which is not possible practically and this could lead to anger issues.

These are some of the ways I deal with an angry patient

  • When the patient is angry you should stay calm as if you also react angrily it could escalate the situation and complicate things.
  • Ask the patient what is the reason for his anger and listen him out completely.
  • Try to explain the situation to the patient and the reason why some things are done in specific way which led to his anger. Assure the patient that he/she is receiving the best possible care from us.
  • If the mistake is on our side, then apologise the patient and assure him that the situation will not repeat again.

Culture doesn’t have a definition as such but it can be explained as a collection of customs, beliefs, values, practices, morals and other stuff a person and his family or community follows and believes in.

If a patient refuses to remove religious jewellery before the surgery, I will explain to him the need for the removal of jewellery and the risks that are present without removal. I will assure him about the safety of the jewel and assure him that he can have it as soon as the surgery is over. I will try and make him understand that it’s not possible to proceed with the procedure if she/he doesn’t comply to the removal of jewellery and the complications that arises if the surgery isn’t performed. This should be enough for them to remove in most situations.

If a patient tells me that he/she doesn’t believe in God. I will respect his beliefs and advice him that he/she doesn’t have to believe in God but it’s better to have hope and belief. They give you a sense of positivity and some courage to battle the hard situations in life. He/she should believe the doctors and nurses who are taking care of him.

If a patient constantly avoids eye contact while talking to her the reason could be fear or she is telling lies. I will try to assure her that she has nothing to fear here and nobody will harm or judge her and the information she provides will be kept private. I will tell her that she can ask all her doubts and tell the truth without any hesitation.

If a patient with limited English nods his head even though he doesn’t seem to understand the procedure I am explaining. I will try to explain it to him in easier words and even then if he doesn’t understand, I will advise him to bring a friend or an attendant who is good with English, can understand what I say and explain it to him.

These are my views on the present topic. Hope this helps you out. Please feel free to give your feedback and if you want further explanation.

Thank you and have a great day.
