Nurses are the heart of medical care in a patient care who spends the entire duty with the sick individuals.

The opportunity that exists for RNs and APRNs to actively participate in policy making are

• Highly professionalised
• Can advocate on behalf or for the patient
• Acts as a decision maker

Some of the challenges which are faced by them are

• Lack of awareness and minimal opportunity
• Poor technical knowledge and clinical skills
• No exposure to policy training program of the federal and state gov

This can be over come by

• Proper training regarding policy right from collect or student period
• Encourage student and faculty to participate in politics for policy making
• To visit the state and federal policy places

The strategies for better advocating are

• Training and education program for the nurses by updating them that they are the largest number of health-care professionals in the healthcare sector.So their voices and suggestions will be heard by the government and aide in policy making
• Make nurses understand that their patient receives the right care ,and correction of mistakes or improvement in care is possible if the nurse provide thrir suggestions

E.g.,The Tufts Medical Center nurse has made the policy change like increase in reimbursement, recruiting staff for better patient care and prevent harm .
