One viable solution would be to allow prisoners to obtain their education while they are in the system. Based on the article "Why Prison Education?", there have been studies that prove the effectiveness of prison education. It states, "A more recent study demonstrates that postsecondary correctional education programs can break down the racial barriers that are a common cause of disciplinary problems in the prison setting." Although prisons have more people who identify themselves as those of color than those who do not, there is still racial segregation. If education was a possibility inside prisons, then there would be a better understanding between those in different racial classes. Since prisons often house those who are from underserved or crime-ridden areas, prisoners would be able to understand and learn from one another if given the opportunity to do so. Furthermore, the ability to receive an education in prison will also increase income prospects once they are out of prison. In the article, "Report Shows Benefit of Prison Education", author Ashley A. Smith states, Formerly incarcerated people who re-enter the labor market with greater levels of education ane more likely to find employment and less likely to return to prison, potentially improving social and economic outcomes for their communities, families and themselves while leading to significant savings to states. By mentioning education as a powerful tool, it effectively states how necessary it is in our current society. Prisoners normally get the short end of the stick due to their crime-ridden background. If they had the opportunity to get a degree, then it will be easier for them to obtain a well-paying job. Even though there might be some suspicion from employers in regards to the previous background, some will be more forgiving due to the tenacity and perseverance needed to break out of the criminal system. Therefore, prisons would be great places to pursue a degree since everyone in the system is mostly from the same background, and there are so many benefits to obtaining an education.
