Ans) Cervical cancer: A malignant tumour of the lower-most part of the uterus (womb) that can be prevented by PAP smear screening and a HPV vaccine.

Key in cervical cancer survival:

- Screening and early detection

Strategies for decreasing cervical cancer mortality:

1. minimize HPV exposure risks
2. minimize persistent HPV via a vaccine
3. screen +/- remove precancerous cells
4. catch and treat cervical cancer early

Prevention of cervical cancer:

1. Avoiding risk factors: stop smoking, decrease number of sexual partners, delay onset of intercourse
2. vaccination

Cervical cancer screening frequency:

1. Annually for life if risk factors present
2. Annually for life if personal history of cervical cancer of HIV+

Incidence of cervical cancer:

- 12,000 diagnosed, 4,000 die annually
- Noninvasive is more common than invasive
- Mortality rate is higher for African American women than white.
