Ans) Difference between Verbal & Non verbal communication:

Verbal communication includes sounds, words, or speaking. Tone of voice, volume, and pitch are all ways to effectively communicate verbally.

Nonverbal communication includes gestures, facial expressions, body movement, timing, touch, and anything else done without speaking.

Therapeutic communication is defined as the face-to-face process of interacting that focuses on advancing the physical and emotional well-being of a patient.

Nurses use therapeutic communication techniques to provide support and information to patients.

5 nonverbal techniques can the nurse use to improve therapeutic communication with a client:

  1. Improve your body language. Body language is essential to effective communication.
  2. Become a better listener. For a conversation to be truly successful, listening may be even more important than talking.
  3. Avoid interuption: It’s understandable to be excited and want to contribute immediate feedback to ideas, but you need to be sure that you’re not cutting off the person with whom you’re speaking.
  4. Exercise patience: Give people enough time to communicate their point to you and show them that you’re interested in helping them. Waiting an extra moment before responding to a person’s comments can often show them that you’re truly listening.
  5. Maintain a positive attitude.

While this is important for your overall quality of life, remaining positive also benefits your communication skills. For example, if you’re talking with patients about possible treatment plans or potential health outcomes, staying upbeat may go a long way to make them feel better about their current situation.

Professional boundaries are vital in social care work because we are working on a deep level with vulnerable people. This means that we have a responsibility to them to do things to the best of our ability and to ensure that our help and support does not damage or disenfranchise them.

Some examples of professional boundary violations are:

- Engaging in a romantic or sexual relationship with a current client, extensive non-beneficial disclosure to the client and receiving a gift of money from the client.

- Abuse and neglect are extreme examples.

- They involve the betrayal of respect and trust within the relationship.

7 Tips for Setting Boundaries At Work

  1. Know your values. Understanding your values helps you figure out where you'd like to set boundaries.
  2. Communicate clearly. Lay out your limits very clearly.
  3. Bring up a boundary or violation right away.
  4. Create structure.
  5. Set boundaries at home.
  6. Focus on concrete explanations.
  7. Prepare for violations.
