Answer #1

Ans) Epidemiology is the study of the health status of human populations.

- Epidemiologists and nurse researchers use descriptive, analytic, and experimental research methods to study causative factors of illness, disability, and premature death;

- Epidemiology is used:

  • To describe the natural history of disease;
  • to identify populations at risk for poor health; and
  • to determine the effectiveness of screening, health education, and treatment measures.

- Epidemiology is helpful to community/public health nurses for describing the health status of a population and the factors that contribute to its well-being for targeting aggregates at risk of specific health conditions, and for evaluating the effectiveness of nursing interventions in populations.

- The natural history of a disease is influenced by characteristics of the people (host), agents (biologic, chemical, and physical), and environment that make up the epidemiologic triangle.

- Epidemiology studies disease trends to help plan what health services and programs.

- The multi systemic approach of an epidemiologist to identify the cause of a disease:

1. Epidemiological tools for data collection in a POPULATION are employed .

2. Determine from collected data whether an association exists between a factor and development of the disease of interest in a population.

Example:

In October 1995 the Medicine Control Agency of the United Kingdom announced that new epidemiological data indicated that users of certain brands of combined oral contraceptives might have a higher risk of venous thromboembolism than women using other types of combined contraceptive pill. At the same time, tentative evidence was emerging that the contraceptive pills associated with an increased risk of venous thrombosis might have a lower risk of myocardial infarction.
