Before performing venipuncture for intravenous contrast administration the radiographer should follow the steps mentioned below:

  • Know the name, dosage, indications, contraindications and adverse effects of the medication
  • The patient must be assessed and explained about the procedure
  • Know about any allergies, medications being currently used
  • Know about the history of any surgical procedures. Atrioventricular shunts and mastectomy have to be considered before selecting the venipuncture site.
  • In addition check the values of blood urea nitrogen, creatinine and glomerular filtration rate tests.
