emergency room.
Since September 11, 2011, Hurricane Katrina, and
recurring mass shootings, emergency and disaster preparedness has a
whole new meaning for the US population. What is the role of the
registered nurse in ensuring continuity of care and maintaining
safety for the patient?
The registered nurse is one of the few healthcare
professionals that will see a patient before, during, and after
surgery. How does the role change affect care and what are the
challenges for nurses
Nurses are the healthcare professionals who spend more time with the patients while providing care to them . They are the healthcare professionals to whom mostly the patients come first and express their complaints . Being a healthcare member spending more time and also the person to whom patient tells the chief complaints ,the assessment skills of the registered nurse should be so fine and smooth that they are able to find the actual cause behind the problem and also to take appropriate interventions accordingly to the complaints . In the nursing process the first step is itself assessment ,it is the base and further everything is based on the assessments that are made. Nurses with inappropriate assessment skills won't be able to provide efficient care and patient centred care because they are not able to assess their problems . It is harmful for the patients as some of the complaints made by the patients will be signs and symptoms of severe complications like for example in the ECG there is more than 3 pair of PVC at T wave , a good assessment making nurse will catch it and I form physician about it as it would lead to ventricular tachycardia and further ventricular fibrillation while a poor assessment nurse will find it normal and the patient has to suffer serious complications .
Nurses has many roles other patient care like researcher, manager , teacher , advocate etc . In the patient care their are many components which includes :--
- health promotion
- disease prevention
- patient safety
- maintaining the care etc
So ,while a nurse provides care she should ensure that she is covering all the aspects or not to avoid complications such as injury , etc . The nurses role is to take care of patient whether it is before surgery or after surgery it doesn't changes . Some of the challenges faced by nurses are :-
- inappropriate nurse patient ratio
- double duties
- low salary because of which they are unable to practice efficiently as they should be .
