1. Vulnerable population
Vulnerable population are those who are more or most likely to be exposed to the chance of being attacked or harmed, either physically or emotionally , or by the physical diseases. They include elderly, people who are economically disadvantaged, racial or ethical minorities, children from low income families, chronic illness patients(such as AIDS patients) and mentally ill people. Vulnerable population are in risk of low access to health care, increased disease and death rate.
Vulnerable population also includes children, pregnant women, victims of disasters( flood, famine, earthquake), malnourished people, homeless people. These vulnerable groups are more prone to diseases, disabilities and abuses. Government should implement health programmes that are specially focusing the vulnerable population so that the health status of the people can be increased.
2. Low literacy rate and health outcomes
Literacy is the ability to read and write. Health literacy is skill to function in a health care environment by understand, and process healthcare information there by taking appropriate health decisions.
Health outcomes are largely depend on the literacy rate of the people. Low literacy affects health literacy of the people. Low literacy is linked with poor health outcomes. Literacy is needed for a person to read and understand health related informations and also illiteracy may make a person to show reluctance to access health care services, especially Medicaid or Medicare services.
Low literacy make the person difficult to comprehend the health information, communicate with the health care providers, understand stand written health information. These communication barriers of patient may result in low access to healthcare services in turn results in poor health outcomes. Studies show that the children of low literacy parents are having poor health status , when compare with children of educated parents.
