SUPRAPUBIC CATHETER is also called INDWELLING CATHETER

SUPRA means above,SUPRAPUBIC means above pubic bone

It is a catheter inserteddirectly into bladder through abdomen.a small cut is given in the lower abdomen and and tube is inserted into the bladder.tube is held in place with the help of suture made on the abdomen,which will be removed in around 7 days.

*INDICATIONS:Blocked urinary flow because of BPH,trauma of urethra,renal stones,congenital defects etc

Failed urethral catheter

for long term usage

**DISCHARGE ADVICES;

-Reassure the patient.provide psychological support.educate the client regarding the home care and when to see a doctor.

-cleaning-ask client to wash hands with soap and water before and after handling catheter

-warn the client to c that catheter doesnt get kinkedor twisted and to make sure that urine is flowing out into the urine collection bag

-keep the urine bag below the level of bladder

-educate the client to make sure that urine bag doesnt drag or pull on the catheter.

-educate them to clean the bag everyday.he could clean it with the materials provided by hospital or as advised by doctor orby filling the bag with 2 parts of veniger and 3 parts of water and allowing it to stand for 20 min and then air dry

-ask the client to clean even the insertion area with soap and water

-advice to keep the genital area also clean

-ask the client to empty the bag when it is full or atleast 8hrs once

-explain the client that catheter must be replaced every 4 to 6 weeks once(as per hospital protocols)

*DRAINAGE BAG POSITION

allow gravity drainage

it should be below the level of waist

bag should be off the floor to prevent contamination

**educate client about the situations where he needs to consult a doctor--

-blocked catheter or if urine is not collected in the bag or less urine been collected in comparision with previous amount

-if catheter leaks or if catheter comes out

-presence of blood or pus in the urine

-if there is flank pain-pain in the back just below rib cage

-if there is fever,chills or body aches

-if the urine collected in the blood is cloudy or smells bad

-pain

-redness or bleeding around catheter

-smell around catheter or from belly
