5.Penicillin comprises of major classifications of antibiotics under it. Amoxicillin belongs to the class of penicillin, so this drug cannot be administered to a patient who has penicillin allergies.

Cefaclor belongs to cephalosporin group of antibiotics. Patient allergic to penicillin has a 10% cross interactions or adverse reaction if cephalosporin are administered. The recent study have revealed that this rate is less than 0.001% and patient can be administered cephalosporin.Another reason is the earlier cephalosporin drugs contained a very minimal amount of penicillin which when administer can cause severe reactions in allergic patients.

6.The following patiwnt education has to be given to the patient and parents regarding cefaclor administration

  • Administer drug only as prescribed (do not overdose or undergoes the child )
  • Monitor for any adverse reactions and report immediately (dyspnea, wheezing, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, hives, rash, bleeding)
  • Complete the antibiotic course ,discontinuing may aggravate and relapse of symptoms
  • Do not administer any vaccination (typhoid vaccine) because this may not work
  • No OTC drugs or herbal supplements
  • Monitor for urine output as this drug can cause kidney problems because the drug is eliminated via renal system.
