NHBPEP i.e The national high blood pressure programs coordinating committee deals with an age-related increase in blood pressure. according to them hypertension increases with age and every third person older than 60 years of age is suffering from high blood pressure.

another existing model for the prevention of hypertension is hypertension awareness and control programs at the national heart, lung and blood and institute (NHLBI). its strategic plan has three major goals -

• from form to function - to understand the molecular and physiological basis of health and disease.
• from function to cause - to understand the clinical mechanism of disease.
• from cause to cure - to enable improvements.

it has been demonstrated in the Framingham Study that high blood pressure is a strong risk factor of cardiovascular diseases and stroke.

some of the hypertension control programs that were existing -

• Hypertension Detection and Follow-up Program (HDFP) - after this program diuretic-based stepped care reduces strokes.
• Systolic Hypertension in the Elderly Program (SHEP) - this program reduced the stroke and cardiac diseases that are the most common cause of hypertension in the elderly people of more than 60 years of age.
