  • Primary function of amino acid is to serve as building blocks of protien.

protein is a macromolecular polymer of amino acids linked together by peptide bond.

peptide bond-covalent bond formed by joining the COOH group of one amino acid and the -NH2 group of another amino acid with removal of one molecule of water.

other functions are:

  • serve as nitrogen storage e.g, glutamine and asparagine
  • act as biological buffers
  • L-aminoacids and derivatives help in nerve transmission ,cell growth etc.
  • Some amino acids form glucose
  • other compound formation-glyciene helps in heme formation.
