Answer #1

1. Mammary glands are present in both males and females. In females, they mature fully, while in males they remain underdeveloped and are non-functional. Mammary ducts are exocrine glands that secrete milk. These ducts are present in males as well in the underdeveloped mammary tissue. But males do not produce hormones prolactin and oxytocin responsible for milk production. So, they are not able to breastfeed like females.

Hence, the statement true.

Therefore, the right answer is option A.

2. Numerous lymph glands are present near the breast.

Major portion of the lymphatic drainage of the breast occurs towards ipsilateral axillary nodes. Hence, almost all the lymphatic of breast drain towards axillae.

So, this is true.

Hence, option A is not correct.

Three groups of axillary lymph nodes namely, subscapular, brachial, and pectoral drain their lymph into the central nodes. These lie deep within the axilla and hence are not felt high on the axilla.

Hence, option B is correct.

Subscapular nodes are present on the posterior wall of axilla and drain the posterior shoulder, lower back of the neck, and posterior thoracic wall. Hence, it drains a portion of the arm.

Hence, option C is incorrect.

Pectoral nodes drain most of the breast. They are not frequently palpable, but central nodes are the most palpable.

Hence, option D is correct.

Therefore, options B and D are not true about lymphatic from the breast.

3. Screening mammography is useful in early diagnosis, prevention, and lessening morbidity related to breast cancer.

The risk of developing breast cancer is estimated to be 5 % for the age group 30 to 40 years. Hence, most recommended interval of screening during this time is once in two years and so biennial screening is not required during this time.

Hence, option A is not correct.

Women at the age group 40 to 50 years should screen once every year. But people who are at a higher risk can opt for biennial screening. Hence, this varies from individual to individual. Hence, biennial screening is not highly essential at this time.

Hence, option B is incorrect.

Women above the age of 75 years should continue with screening programs, but do not require biennial screening.

Hence, option D is not correct.

United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) has recommended biennial screening for women aged 50 to 74 years. This includes those who are at average risk as well.

Therefore, the correct answer is 50 to 74 years, option C.

4. Gynecomastia is the swelling of or enlarged breast in men caused due to hormone imbalance. The main symptom of this condition is the abnormal enlargement of the breast. The nodules will be soft and will be painless. Though breasts may become irregular, ulcerations are not usually observed.

Hard, irregular, or ulcerating nodules is most likely suggestive of breast cancer.

Hence, the statement is false.

Therefore, the right answer is option B.
