There are four types of descriptive statistics
1. Measures of Frequency:
* Count, Percent, Frequency
* Shows how often something occurs
* It is used when we want to show how often a response is given
2. Measures of Central Tendency
* Mean, Median, and Mode
* Locates the distribution by various points
* This is used when we want to show how an average or most commonly indicated response
3. Measures of Dispersion or Variation
* Range, Variance, Standard Deviation
* Identifies the spread of scores by stating intervals
* Range = High/Low points
* Variance or Standard Deviation = difference between observed score and mean
* This is used when we want to show how "spread out" the data are. It is helpful to know when your data are so spread out that it affects the mean
4. Measures of Position
* Percentile Ranks, Quartile Ranks
* Describes how scores fall in relation to one another. Relies on standardized scores
* This is used when we want to compare scores to a normalized score (e.g., a national norm)
Hence only average is an example of descriptive statistics.

What is the main difference between a bar chart and a histogram to display data? a. Bars in a bar chart have space between responses, where histograms have no space between bars because the variables are ordinal (ordered). b. A bar chart displays descriptive statistics, where a histogram does not. statistics re a histogram does not. C. A bar chart should be used for ordinal data, a histogram should be used for dichotomous data. d. There is no difference between...
Descriptive statistics have which of the following properties? Select one: O a. They are numerical or graphical summaries of data. O b. They are used to examine relationships between variables in a data set O C. They are used to see how well sample data can be generalized to the population. O d. All of the above.

A historian wants to estimate the average age at marriage of men in a region in the early 19th century. Within her state's archives, she finds marriage records for the years 1800-1820, which she treats as a sample of all marriage records from the early 19th century. The average age of the men in the records is 29.6 years. Using the appropriate statistical method, she estimates that the average age of grcoms in the region...
