Ans) Nursing Interventions: Melanoma

- Encourage verbalization of feelings and concerns. Allow time for the patient to adjust to the diagnosis and prognosis, provide support and encouragement, and assist with positive coping strategies.
- Prepare the patient and family for surgical excision, as indicated.
- Provide appropriate surgical site care; inspect the area for signs and symptoms of infection.
- Give prescribed drugs. Assist with administration of chemotherapeutic agents; ensure patent I.V. access.
- If the patient is receiving cisplatin, ensure that he's adequately hydrated before and for 24 hours after treatment to reduce the risk of nephrotoxicity.
- Provide a high-protein, high-calorie diet.
- Obtain periodic weights.
- Obtain specimens for laboratory testing to evaluate for bone marrow suppression and renal dysfunction secondary to chemotherapy.
- Assist the patient with measures to manage the adverse effects of chemotherapy, such as nausea and vomiting.
- Evaluate for possible depression or suicidal ideation if the patient is receiving interferon-alpha-2b; evaluate for hypotension if the patient is receiving interleukin-2.
