One of the UAP on your unit is assigned to care for a 36-year-old man who has bone fractures and extensive open wounds as a result of a car crash. You find that she is reluctant to enter the patient’s room and note that she is trying to exchange patient assignments with one of the other UAP. When you question her about this behavior, she tells you that although she does not know this man personally, he lives in her neighborhood and is known to be HIV positive. (This information is not documented anywhere in his inpatient medical record.) She says she does not want to touch anyone who may have AIDS.
