Being a vegetarian refers to completely avoiding on eating meat and meat products.

If we consider being a vegetarian we need to understand that it too has some good as well as some ill effects with it.

In today's era being vegetarian has become a trend in people of various developed countries. People who follow certain religions like Hindus and Buddhist, they tend to become vegetarian as a sign of devotion. In their religion killing and eating animal is a sin because of which the people avoid eating meat as well as meat products. While in some group of people they tend to love animals and save them from getting harm and extinction. They feel the pain of the animals and try to avoid harming them by any means. Hence, the reason for being a vegetarian maybe different and plays a very important role in people's lifestyle and eating habits.

There are various different advantages in being a vegetarian but as advantages do not come along with anything and everything, it tags along the disadvantages with it. Now let us focus on the advantages and disadvantages of being a vegetarian.

Advantages are as follows:

1. Vegetarian diet tends to be a complete diet which includes high consumption of various nutrients such as fibre, vitamins, iron, folic acid, magnesium, unsaturated fats, phytochemicals etc.

2. These diets are very clean diets.

3. The vegetarians have low level of cholesterol and low blood pressure and lower risk of getting heart disease.

4. This diet is considered to be very healthy and people will have longer life expectancy.

5. The body requires less effort to digest the veggies.

6. It saves lots of money.

7. Due to lesser building of toxins and chemicals in our body, the vegetarian diet will help to enhance or increase our life span.

8. It will help in lowering the risk of getting stroke and obesity as the vegetarians tend to choose the food that they eat and become conscious of it.

9. A vegetarian diet will help in lowering the risk of getting diabetes as the nutrients will be more easier to be absorbed in the body and the fatty acid is less and the sugar level in bloodstream will be very low.

10. It will help in improving the health of our skin because of the adequate amount of nutrients and minerals present in the vegetables. Also it consists of antioxidants which will help to refresh and provide proper health to our skin.

11. It will reduce the depression and keeps a person more happier than the meat or fish eaters. A vegetarian looks more happier than a non vegetarian. Also the vegetables are more fresh and organic which helps to cleanse our mind and keep our thoughts positive.

12. Vegetarian food helps in good metabolism as it takes less time and effort to digest the veggies than the meat. Also the resting time of our digestive system will be more which will automatically improve our metabolism.

13. It also reduces the risk of getting cataract. There is a direct relationship between the choice of our diet and the cataract where the meat eaters are more prone to get cataract than veggie lovers.

14. It also reduces the risk of some kind of cancers.

15. It facilitates in weight loss as the food that the vegetarians will eat mostly consists of greens, fruits, veggies etc. which are the diet foods suggested by nutritionist. Also the fat in the vegetarian food will be very less which will reduce the risk of building up of fats or fat disposition will be very less.

16. Being vegetarian people tend to become smarter and more good in thinking and reasoning.

17. People become more active.

Hence there are verified different benefits with the vegetarian diet especially in the health aspect. It is a better option to switch the diet to become vegetarian if a person is suffering from any kind of disease conditions. But with merits the demerits tends to tag along in everything possible. If something has a merit it also includes demerit along with it. So now let us discuss about the demerits of being a vegetarian.

Demerits are as follow:

There are few demerits of being a vegetarian which should be kept in mind by all the people who are or who wishes to be a vegetarian.

The demerits of being vegetarian are very easy to overcome and will not be a problem in a person's life or health.

1. It is very difficult to get enough amount of proteins in the people with vegetarian diet. Various dairy products are found to replace the meat for providing protein to our body but the meat and meat products have higher amount and provide abundantly.

2. The vegetarian people have a very little choice of food or the choice is limited. Unlike non vegetarians, the vegetarians have few choices in their foods and cannot have the tendency to have varieties of foods in their plates, which might be the sole reason for many people to be hesitant to turn into vegetarian.

3. Dining out or eating out can be a problem for the vegetarians. Almost all the restaurants in different places will have the menu to attract the meat lovers and will have a very few or almost no any vegetarian meals. Also if they have a menu for vegetarians it will be the same without the meat in it. The food will be almost nothing other than salad and bread.

4. While going out with the friends will be a problem. The outings with non vegetarian friends will take you to the places with only or most of the non vegetarian places. Also you as well as the friends will be having an awkward situation during the time of eating or passing the food. Also sometimes there will be the peer pressure on trying out the non vegetarian food for fun or for the taste.

5. During the vacation, the problem of finding vegetarian restaurant or menu will be very difficult in new places. Also during the time of travelling almost all the food available will be non vegetarian and fast food.

6. The holidays and barbeques with friends and families will be awkward and disturbing.

7. The celebration of holidays and festivals should be replanned without the presence of meat for eg during the time of thanks giving the traditional turkey eating should be replaced by something else.

8. The vegetarians should learn how to cook as almost all the people knows how to cook meat and will not be very familiar with the veggies hence the taste will be bad or not proper for them. Hence learning to cook is one of the most important thing for the vegetarians.

9. The family and friends will have different habits and plans which may not be including you. The people of similar habits tend to make plans which may not be suitable for you and so you will have to stand back during the time of conversation which includes food.

10. Almost all the people may not tend to be understanding the purpose of being a vegetarian and may force you or may suggest you to leave being vegetarian.

Hence being a vegetarian is not an easy job. The people do have some negative points but can be overcome very easily.
