Answer #1

Number of population at initial sampling date is 100,000

After 10 days, the population size is 500,000

dN/dt = rN

rN = (500,000 - 100,000)/ 10

rN = 40,000

r = 40,000/ 500,000

= 0.08

= 8%

The size of the population after 10 days,

x(t) = x0 × (1 + r) t

= 500,000 x (1 + 0.08)^10

= 1079462

    2) Earth’s oceans contains 1027 cells of Prochlorococcus, a tiny single-celled cyanobacterium. They have a generation time of approximately 1 generation per day. One of them gets a mutation that increases its exponential growth rate by 5%. The total Prochlorococcus population size is virtually constant from day to day: as many are killed by phage as are born by cell division. a. What is the exponential growth rate of the ancestor? The mutant? b. Assuming the ocean is well-mixed and...

    St. Francis Assisted Living Facility St. Francis Medical Center, a 450 bed rehabilitation non-profit hospital began to see a significant decline in admissions. St. Francis' mission focuses on inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation of the severely injured and catastrophically ill. While the patient census varied from month to month, it appeared to the St. Francis Board of Trustees that the inpatient population was slowly but steadily declining. The hospital's market researchers reported that fewer people were being severely injured due to...

In that population a mutation results in a parasite resistant genotype that spreads through the population through natural selection. A subsequent mutation in the parasite results in a genotype that is unaffected by the newly evolved resistant guppy genotype. 10. Write a one-page summary of the attached paper? INTRODUCTION Many problems can develop in activated sludge operation that adversely affect effluent quality with origins in the engineering, hydraulic and microbiological components of the process. The real "heart" of the activated sludge system is the development and maintenance of a mixed microbial culture (activated sludge) that treats wastewater and which can be managed. One definition of a wastewater treatment plant operator is a "bug farmer", one who controls the aeration...
