Computer Viruses:

Computer Viruses are software programs that perform unwanted actions on a computer. These viruses are also referred to as malware. These viruses are programmed to spread from one system to another system. The main purpose of these viruses is to infect systems and gain control and steal the sensitive information present in the documents and files. Computer viruses cause much damage like they gain the control of the system and then infect other systems by sending infected files or they can be security issues with the information they steal and misuse the sensitive data.

There are many ways how these viruses are spread. One is by downloading files from infected web pages; other way is through email links. Other way is transferring files through removable storage devices like Pen drives (USB drives).

There are different types of computer viruses like Boot sector virus, Direct Action virus, Resident virus, multipartite virus, polymorphic virus, overwrite virus and space filler virus.

Boot sector virus infects the master boot file. It is hard to remove this virus because to delete this system needs to be formatted.

Direct Action virus infects the system by staying hidden in the memory. It is not easy to identify this because there is no performance change in the system

Resident Virus resides in the system and it is hard to detect this virus. It is hard to remove this virus.

Multipartite virus infects the system in many ways. It infects the boot file as well as the exec files in the system.

Polymorphic virus is difficult to identify even using anti-virus software’s. Because the system settings are being replicated by the virus.

Overwrite virus deletes all the files it infects. This is the major issue because the files go missing. This is mainly cause though email links.

Space filler virus fills spaces in the exec files. They don’t create any damage.

How to protect computer systems from infecting virus:

1. Keep your software’s and operating systems up to date.

2. Enable firewall settings for your system.

3. Always be careful while accessing the websites on internet and downloading files from the websites. They can redirect you to malicious websites which are harmful for your system. Don't click attached links from unknown emails.

4. Use any of the anti-virus software’s

5. Before connecting any portable devices, scan them and then make any kind of operations on them.
