Calcium binds to calmodulin, and together they activate a variety of proteins, including myosin light chain kinase. Myosin light chain kinase plays a central role in regulating the actin-myosin interaction of smooth muscle.

Intracellular calcium levels are about 10,000 times less than extracellular calcium levels.

Calcium acting in conjunction with diacylglycerol activates protein kinase C not protein kinase A.
