A-McDonalds and Toyota both use technology to help their supply chain. McDonald's takes the sale of products to initiate the demand for new unfinished products at a store. Toyota gets orders from regional dealerships and takes the information versus demand in a region to determine how many vehicles a particular dealership will receive.

Supply chain means the facilities, functions, and activities involved in producing and delivering a product or service from suppliers to customers.

For McDonald’s, the suppliers supply raw materials from different farms at tier 3, such as potatoes, corns, and meats; then transported by through trains, buses, or steamers to tier 2; at tier 2, processing those raw materials to be prepared (preliminary working), like chickens been processed to be edible meat; then transport those materials to tier 1 to reprocessing them, like cut meats to be small pieces to be ready to fry; after that, they’ll transported to warehouses, orsend to those retail stores directly; and then, those food will be fried or cooked to serve to customers.

For Toyota, the suppliers supply raw materials from different countries or areas at tire 3, such as wood, rubber, and metal; at tire 2, those raw materials been processing at preliminary working; at tire 1, the company will processing produce the products – cars; and then, those products will ship to warehouses at different countries or ship to retail stores.

B- Bullwhip effect is the occurrence of variance of the orders sent to the manufacturer and supplier to that sent to the customers. This large variance is identified in supply chain.

There are many factors that contribute to this effect. They are:-

  • Supply chain not organized properly
  • Lack of communication
  • Customer returning the products often due to free return policy.
  • Discounts and promotions may increase the demand for short period of time.
  • Relying more on past demand information.

Bullwhip effect impacts the financial performance of an organization. It may result in inefficient production or excess production in order to fulfill the demand. The situation of stock-out leads to poor customer service and lost sales. There is also a low utilization of distribution channel. It also damage the reputation of the organization. The cost incurred by the organization due to bullwhip effect include contractual penalties for coping up with the consequences of failed fulfillment. In order to meet the demand variability, the organization is required to hire or dismiss employees that adds training cost, hiring cost and lay-offs cost.

These are the following measures to overcome bullwhip effect.

  • Focusing more on customer and designing the network accordingly.
  • Based on the demand the inventory should be optimized.
  • Focusing on sharing information and extracting information from partners.
  • Product complexity should be managed appropriately.
  • Maintaining the price of product stable.

C- A: overseas container: The supply chain quality issues will be in the areas of actual vs usable capacity of containers, maintenance issues of containers, aging factor of containers, tensile stregnts issue in containers.

B: Container ships : Fuel efficiency issues of ships, maintenance and engkne failure issues of ships, wear and tear issues.

C: transportation: in this quality issues can be in the form of late delivery, packaging issues which results in product damage, lack of proper customer satisfaction because of communication error or lack of clarity, capacity utikisautil of truck etc.

D: packaging : lack of following packaging standards, poor packaging leads to damage of product, non scientific method of packaging leads to less utilisation of space in vehicle or containers.

E Distribution: lack of co ordination with service providers, late delivery issues lack of proper documentation, inability of tracking shipment's. Poor selection of mode of transport etc.

Warehousing :- lack of proper storage area utilisation, non availability of stocks, no proper stacking of products may leads to damage, poor warehousing design may leads to more storage cost, poor safeguard norms for products

The performance of the supply chain issues will be in the areas of real vs functional container strength, container maintenance issues, container aging factor, container friction stretch issue.

C-B Container Ships

Container ships: issues with ships ' fuel efficiency, repairs and engine problems with vessel loss, wear and tear problems.

C-C Transportation

Under this section, quality issues may be in the form of late delivery, packaging issues resulting in product damage, lack of customer satisfaction due to communication error or lack of clarity, truck utilization capacity, etc.

C-D Packaging

Lack of compliance with packaging requirements and poor packaging leads to harming the product, non-scientific packaging method also leads to less use of vehicle or container storage.

C-E Distribution

Lack of proper co-ordination with service providers and lack of proper reporting on late delivery problems etc. leads in failure to track the deliveries.

C-F Warehousing

Inadequate storage area use, inadequate inventory availability, inadequate product stacking may result in damage, poor storage layout can lead to higher storage costs, poor product safety standard etc.
