The four marketing management philosophies are generational or time phased philosophies. They also depict the evolution of marketing philosophies across the decades. These four philosophies are
Production: This is the oldest philosophy where the companies focused on increasing their production. Product variety was low and whatever was made was eventually sold in the market. Consumers had few choices. Example, use of assembly line manufacturing.
Sales: Here the focus is on aggressive selling to the consumers. The production challenges were overcome and the approach was to sell as many units as possible to the target consumers. Example, the rise of door to door salesmen.
Marketing: The main focus of this philosophy is to attract customers to the product rather than aggressive selling. The marketing methods became more efficient and the focus was on creating products that the consumers will like. Example, the advertisement revolution.
Society: The key focus here is to make products that are not only liked by the consumers but they are also good for the society. The companies demonstrated social responsibility and awareness while making, distributing and selling the products. Example, the socially responsible brand equity
