Hi,
Hope you are doing well.

Option (A) is the substance with the highest surface tension.
Explanation:
We know that, surface tension is a property of fluid in which the fluid tends to reduce it's surface area due to increased attraction between molecules.
Attraction between molcules can be due to van der waalls forces, dipole force or Hydrogen bonding.
We know that, Among these intermolecular forces, Hydrogen bonding is the strongest.
From the given molecules, (A) and (B) will have intermolecular hydrogen bonding, but (A) will have a stronger Hydrogen bonding due to two (-OH) molecules.
Hence, intermolecular force of attraction in substance (A) will be the highest and hence, it will have the highest surface tension.

Choose the substance with the lowest surface tension. A. CH3CH2CH2CH3 B. CH3CH2CH2CH2CH2CH3 C. CH3NH2 D. CH3SH E. CH3CH(CH3)CH3 I know that the answer is E but can someone please explain the difference the parathesis has on the surface tension? Because I was debating between A and E and they both have the same molar mass. Thanks!
