Q) Within the C.elegans germline, what would be the expected phenotype of constitutively expressing the intracellular cleavage product of GLP-1 in the germline stem cells? Is this loss-of-function or gain-of-function phenotype?

answer:

i. The glp-1 gene encodes a membrane protein which is important for inductive cell interactions between the somatic distal tip cell and germline during development of c.elegans. GLP-1, a member of the Notch family of transmembrane receptor required for proliferative signal. glp-1 activity causes germ cells to arresting mitosis and enter meiosis finally, premature resulting in a sterile.

ii. glp-1 mutants shown gain-of-function germline pattern defects is called proximal proliferation phenotype
